WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Mice feed heavily on seeds, insects, household garbage, and food found in our kitchens. Mice are nocturnal. When they are seen during the day, it is an indication of high rodent infestation and/or a sign that rodenticides are in use. In corners of cupboards, under sinks, behind refrigerators and stoves you can see mouse droppings with the naked eye. There are a number of tools used to eliminate rodents from your property. The most common are rodenticides, snap traps, glue boards, and live traps. Future infestations can be minimized by removing unused items and harbourage areas on the exterior of the property. Sealing secondary access points (taps, gas lines and vents at ground level) will take away possible entry points. The weakest points in a residential structure are the front doors, back doors, and garages, if attached. Remembering not to store household items near these entry points will stop mice from taking advantage of an open door. The weakest points in a commercial structure are usually overhead doors. Remembering to keep doors closed when not in use will stop mice from having easy access to all structures.

How to Identify a Mouse
The house mouse has several litters per year, of 2–7 young each. The gestation period is 21–24 days. Adult house mice range in size from 5 to 8 inches. Their ears are moderately large and distinct. They range in colour from light brown to dark (nearly black).
OUR SOLUTION
Solving a mouse issue can be complex. At Peregrine, we focus on two things to solve a mouse infestation. Firstly, we strive to provide a rodent-free environment in a professional and timely manner. Secondly, we provide the tools and knowledge the client needs to minimize the chances of an infestation reoccuring. Mice are about 20% of our work load. We know mice come in waves; we always provide a minimum of two services when dealing with mice issues. This is because we don’t know how many mice you have until the pest control service technician returns for a follow up service. The primary tool we use to eliminate mice from structures are tamper-resistant bait stations containing a commercial rodenticide. On occasion, we also use snap traps, glueboards, and mechanical devices. On the exterior of the property, the service technician focuses on identifying and sealing, at ground level, minor holes around taps, gas lines, vents and other fixtures. Recommendations are provided for repairing larger items — these recommendations may include garage door seals, side door seals, vent covers, etc. The goal is to remove opportunities for mice to enter a structure.
COMMON CONCERNS
Why use mouse poison to solve a mouse issue instead of other methods?
The reason why it is common to use mouse poison primarily is that it more efficiently provides a pest-free environment. The weakness of using devices such as snap traps and glueboards is that you will only capture a handful of mice at a time.
Will I have odour issues?
When a mouse dies in a structure using rodenticides, you don’t have a choice where the mouse dies. In most cases, mice are like you and I — when they don’t feel well they will return to the nesting site. The nesting site can be in a wall void, roof void, burrow outside, etc. In some instances, mice will die in open areas such as on the kitchen floor. The mouse usually only smells if it dies next to a heat source such as a hot water tank, the furnace, or the motor of the fridge. Fortunately, odour issues are very few and far between.
Why didn’t my mouse treatment work?
Eliminating mice from the interior of a structure is straight-forward in the pest control world. Some of the reasons for reoccurring mouse infestations include, but aren’t limited to, our personal habits. This includes leaving doors open in the summer months, storing grass or birdseed being in the garage and keeping excessive amounts of personal items on the exterior of the property. These habits allow a greater number of hiding spots for mice. Rodent programs focus, for the most part, on eliminating mice on the interior of a building. But paying mind to the exterior, and surrounding areas, minimize mouse problems moving forward.
How do I know if I have a mouse or a squirrel in a wall void?
Knock on the wall where you are hearing the noise. If the noise stops, then reoccurs in the same general area within a couple of minutes, it is probably mice due to a freeze response. Larger wildlife tends to have a flight response and will flee disturbance.
